I’ve been a student and teacher of yoga for over 30 years. Along the way, I explored countless styles and approaches, believing, like many yogis still do, that stretching and becoming more flexible was the key to true yogic enlightenment.
Despite my years of dedication, I found myself in a surgeon’s office, learning that I might need spinal fusion to alleviate my chronic pain. That was my wake-up call. How could I, a committed yogi, be in such poor physical shape? Why was I, someone who had dedicated his life to yoga, on the verge of major surgery? These questions sparked my quest for answers.
Through this journey, I discovered a powerful truth: stretching and the pursuit of flexibility were the root causes of my chronic pain. My yoga practice, with its emphasis on extreme flexibility, was weakening my muscles, destabilizing my body, and setting me up for a life of pain.
Thankfully, I was introduced to Muscle Activation. After just one session, I felt an immediate, profound shift. My body became stronger, more stable, and, most importantly, pain-free. For the first time in years, I felt like I could move freely again. But when I resumed my usual yoga routine, the pain returned. That’s when I realized that stretching was the culprit.
I dove deeper into the science of Muscle Activation and realized that the conventional focus on stretching in yoga was actually harmful to the body. This revelation led me to transform my approach to yoga entirely. I knew I couldn’t keep teaching or practicing the same way, so I developed a new method—Applied Yoga Anatomy & Muscle Activation (AYAMA™).
AYAMA™ is revolutionary. It challenges everything we’ve been taught, not just in yoga but in fitness, wellness and even the mainstream medical world—that stretching is the key to a healthy body. Instead, it focuses on muscle activation to unlock strength, stability, and mobility, allowing for pain-free living.
Today, my mission is clear: to share the AYAMAâ„¢ method with as many people as possible so they too can live a life free from pain and experience the true transformative power of yoga.
